The team listed below is the chief executive’s senior leadership team through which the operational management of the business is discharged and which ensures cohesion and coordination across our businesses.

Prof Dr Uwe Krueger,
Uwe Krueger - CEO

Prof Dr Uwe Krueger was appointed an executive director in June 2011, taking up the post of CEO in August 2011. He is a physicist who studied at the University of Frankfurt am Main, graduating with a PhD in complex system theory. He also studied at Columbia University (New York), the Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris) and at Harvard (Boston). He holds an Honorary Professorship in Physics from the University of Frankfurt am Main and an Honorary Doctorate from Heriot-Watt University awarded for his exemplary entrepreneurial leadership and contributions to the application of science, engineering and technology to business and industry across the globe.

Uwe has spent the majority of his career leading engineering and consulting organisations in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. He began his career at international strategy consulting firm, A. T. Kearney, followed by leadership positions at Hochtief AG, an international provider of construction services, including chief executive officer of central and eastern Europe, and senior vice president and chairman of Turner International based in Dallas, USA.

More recently he was chief executive officer of Swiss company, Oerlikon, one of the world’s leading high-tech industrial companies specialising in machine and plant engineering. He joined Atkins from Texas Pacific Group, a private equity investment firm based in London and San Francisco, and Cleantech Switzerland, a trade promotion organisation in the area of sustainability which operates on behalf of the Swiss Federal Government. He is currently on the boards of Aggreko plc (Glasgow, UK), Ontex S.A. (Zele, Belgium) and SUSI Partners AG (Zurich, Switzerland). Uwe is also a committee member of Switzerland’s Administrative Commission for the Decommissioning and Disposal Fund.

Richard Cross,

Richard Cross joined Atkins in February 2014. Previously he was the Global chief information officer at Arup Group Limited and has over 30 years’ experience in managing and consulting on technology transformation in publicly listed companies around the world. During his time at Arup, Richard was responsible for successfully globalising the organisation’s IT and systems group and developing new business strategies that embraced technologies in cloud computing, social media and big data processing. Prior to this, he worked as a senior executive in sectors as diverse as media, financial and professional services. He has also led successful digital innovation start-up businesses.

Chris Birdsong,
Chief executive officer, Asia Pacific 
Chris Birdsong - Chief Executive Officer, Asia Pacific

Chris Birdsong joined Atkins in 2007 and was appointed managing director of the UK Management Consultants business later that year. Chris previously worked for Bechtel for over 30 years in project development and delivery in several business sectors, including infrastructure, transport, oil and gas, power generation, heavy industries and telecommunications. He is a fellow of the Institute of Business Consulting (IBC) and is on the IBC Council. In 2010 Chris was appointed as regional managing director, Asia Pacific and Europe. He moved to Hong Kong in late 2012 to dedicate his focus on the development of the Asia Pacific region.

James Cullens,

James Cullens - Group HR and marcomms director

James Cullens was appointed an executive director in July 2014, taking up the post of Group HR director from 30 July 2014. He has significant senior leadership experience gained both in the UK and internationally. James was previously Group HR director for Hays plc, having held similar positions previously with Linde AG, The BOC Group plc and PA Consulting Group. A graduate of Cambridge University, James is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and holds a MSc in HR development, a MA and a MLitt. He was a non-executive director of the CIPD until April 2015. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board, Open University Business School.

Heath Drewett,

Heath Drewett - Group finance director

Heath Drewett was appointed an executive director in June 2009 when he joined Atkins as Group finance director. A graduate in mathematics from Peterhouse, Cambridge, he started his career at Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP) where he qualified as a chartered accountant. He has held a variety of senior finance and corporate development roles at British Airways Plc (BA) and The Morgan Crucible Company plc. He spent seven years in BA’s finance team, latterly holding the position of head of business performance.

Martin Grant,

Martin Grant - Chief Executive Officer, Energy

Following several years as the managing director of Atkins’ Oil & Gas division, Martin has been the chief executive officer of Atkins’ Energy business since 2007. Atkins has been providing high end engineering consultancy services to the oil and gas, nuclear, power and renewables sector for over four decades. He has led the expansion of Atkins’ Energy business into the North America, Middle East, Norway and Australia.

He is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers with both a BSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering as well as the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE) Silver Medal. He was also appointed as an RAE Fellow in 2012.

Dominic Harvey,

Dominic Harvey - Chief Executive Officer, Infrastructure and Cities Advisory

Dominic Harvey joined Atkins in September 2015. In his previous legal career, he had over 18 years’ experience in international law firms, with the last nine years as a managing partner, specialising in the infrastructure and energy sectors. He has been leading multidisciplinary advisory teams specialising in all aspects of projects including project finance, asset acquisitions and restructurings across a client base of governments, corporate and financial institutions and sovereign wealth funds in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa and Europe. He is well regarded in the EMEA and APAC regions for his knowledge and publications in the area of specialised project finance and public-private partnerships (PPPs). He is a graduate of the College of Law, London and King’s College, London.

Jeff Herriman,

Jeff Herriman joined Atkins in 2011.  Previously, he held similar roles at Oerlikon, Hochtief-Turner and Disctronics and has held roles as a non-executive director for a number of technology-related start-ups.  As a consultant with A. T. Kearney, CSC Index and SIAR-Bossard, Jeff also advised on corporate strategy and M&A, as well as operations, information technology and organisation.  Jeff has more than 25 years’ experience in starting, growing, buying/selling and turning around companies in the US, Europe and Asia.

Rajesh Kalra,

Rajesh Kalra - Managing director, India

Rajesh Kalra joined Atkins in 2013 as managing director of Atkins’ business in India. He has over 25 years of experience in the engineering and IT sectors, with roles in operations, business and strategy development. Previously, he was president of business operations for Rolta India Limited and managing director of RMSI PVT LTD (a subsidiary of Risk Management Solutions, Inc.). He holds a degree in civil engineering from the Regional College of Engineering, Nagpur and a master's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology.

Donald Lawson,

Donald Lawson joined Faithful+Gould in 1986 and he has been instrumental in the growth of the business. He is a graduate of Heriot-Watt University where he studied Building Economics and Quantity Surveying. His experience includes the delivery of major projects in the energy, finance and manufacturing sectors and multi location work programmes for clients with significant property portfolios. He considers environmental issues as paramount and is sponsor of the Group carbon investment fund. Donald was appointed worldwide chief executive officer of Faithful+Gould in 2011.

Simon Moon,

Simon Moon joined Atkins in 1996 from British Aerospace (now BAe Systems) and has held a number of positions across the Group. In his early career with Atkins he led the UK Defence Systems businesses as managing director. He subsequently became commercial director for UK Design and Engineering Solutions, then Group business improvement director, before becoming managing director for UK Design and Engineering. He joined the Middle East regional business in November 2011 as chief operating officer before assuming his current role as chief executive officer in November 2013.  Simon is a chartered mechanical engineer and fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

George Nash,

George Nash - Chief executive officer, North America

George joined Atkins in October 2016 as chief executive officer of our North America region. He is a mechanical engineering graduate of Brown University (Rhode Island) and a Professional Engineer in the state of Massachusetts. George brings significant leadership and business development experience across the global energy, infrastructure and construction markets.

He has held a number of executive roles with Washington Group International. Inc., where he gained experience providing a wide range of consulting, engineering, construction and commissioning services to markets worldwide.

George spent 7 years with URS, including 3 years as Chief Operating Officer, and 1 year as President of their global Energy and Construction Division. After the AECOM merger with URS, he took on the role of President of the Energy, Infrastructure and Industrial Construction division.

Nick Roberts,

Nick Roberts - Chief Executive Officer, UK and Europe

Nick is chief executive officer of Atkins’ business in the UK and Europe, responsible for all aspects of operations spanning multiple infrastructure, building and industrial markets. A member of the company’s Group leadership team, he focuses on strategy, organisational agility and rapid innovation, driving change across the organisation particularly around the fusion of the digital and physical environment.

Prior to his current role, Nick was Atkins North America’s strategy director and MD of the infrastructure business, responsible for leading the integration and transformation of a major acquisition. With over 20 years’ experience in consulting, he has held several managing director positions at Atkins across a variety of sectors and previously at consulting firms in Canada.

Nick is a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion, and leads the Atkins Military Covenant programme which has received the Gold Award from the Ministry of Defence. He also sponsors Atkins’ Women’s Professional Network in the UK and champions the company’s STEM initiatives, which aim to nurture and inspire the next generation of infrastructure and engineering specialists. He is proud of Atkins’ success in the Sunday Times Best Big Companies to Work For awards.

A chartered geologist by profession, Nick holds a Masters from the University of Wales and a BSc in Geology from the University of Reading. He currently serves on the Commission for the Vibrant Economy sponsored by Grant Thornton, The Institution of Civil Engineers Brexit Leadership Group and the Industrial Digitalisation Strategy Leadership Group. He also mentors leaders of third sector organisations.

Neil Thomas,

Neil Thomas - Group technical and QSSE Director

Neil Thomas joined Atkins in 1989. With a background in transportation projects, he was seconded to the Connect PFI JV for roads in 1995 and was subsequently appointed chief executive officer of the Connect Roads group. Neil returned to Atkins in 2001 to head the design and technical consultancy within the Highways and Transportation business and became managing director in 2006. Neil was appointed managing director of the Water and Environment business in 2011 and in 2016 he became the Group technical and QSSE director.

Neil is a chartered civil engineer with over 30 years' consultancy experience. He is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Highways and Transportation, and a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. He holds an MA in engineering from Cambridge University.

Richard Webster,

Richard Webster - Company Secretary

Richard Webster was appointed Company Secretary in October 2007 having joined Atkins in 2001. A graduate in medieval and modern history from the University of Birmingham, he is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. Richard provides support and guidance to the Atkins board of directors with particular focus on corporate governance and relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.
